Your example is a very simple and effective theological kick to the guts for any JW. ie a very objective prophesy that did not come to pass. It is also a particularly bizzare example that could get a JW thinking.
because i love running and i am going to start training for the durango double.
it's in colorado (durango) on october 6 + 7. .
it is a 50k (~30 mi) trail run on saturday followed by a road marathon (26 mi) on sunday...

i haven't read marks story in a while and was looking for the part where he states ted jaracz went out in field service with him and a few other brothers back in the 70's, in newport beach/ balboa island, for another thread here.. if you grew up in southern california as a jw, you might find it a very intriging tale of just how the elite congs were being run.

At 14 he builds a bike and starts racing. He instantly does incredable times (by today's standards using today's technology), and does his training riding up and down mountains without gears or brakes. You can't ride a bike with track-racing gearing up mountains and you would not dream of racing down them without brakes (he quotes 50 mph).
Then he starts running...I doubt any Australian 14 yo has ever run the times he quotes. I can count on one hand the adults in my state capable of running at his supposed standard.
Then on a whim he teaches himself to swim. Soon thereafter he unofficially breaks world records in all strokes.
He is sadly lacking in credibility.

when the story was being introduced i thought they were talking about jw's, but then it all sounded much worse:.

It was a weird election, Exclusive Brethren found to be secretly funding anti-green (a political party) propaganda in the media....this group being supposedly non-political and anti-media.
My wife once lived next door to their church. You can pick them from a mile away. Women always with head coverings and long hair, everyone wearing extremely conservative hair styles and clothes. They cannot eat in the company of non-believers or indulge in any media. I get the impression that they treat all non-believers as if they are "disfellowshipped".
It would be a nightmare being an Exclusive Brethren child.
